Franchisor and franchisee are as close to business partners as you can get.

It’s like a marriage, really. You’re signing up to do business together for 5, 10 years or more.

On a Tuesday in 2015, instead of becoming an equity owner in the franchisor I helped build from the ground up, I left to start a franchise marketing company, Diffactory, in our basement.

Diffactory was growing. FAST.

Until 2017, when I almost lost everything.

My wife and kids and I had planned to drive around the country to visit friends and family we hadn’t seen in awhile.

We cruised hundreds of miles through farmlands and cities, listening to music and singing along (badly), sharing meals, stories, and laughs with the people we loved…

But the whole trip, I was putting on a fake smile, because deep down I knew what was really going on…

Crash and Burn. (or something like that?)

Behind the scenes, my business was imploding.

Earlier that year, everything was looking up. We had just hired an experienced (and expensive) COO who was going to help take our business to the next level.

That same week, another phone call that changed my life.

One of our biggest clients had become so successful, they were able to create their own internal marketing team.

It was great for them, and spoke highly of our ability to get them there, but it meant they’d no longer be a client.

The timing couldn’t have been worse.

Even though I knew I should stay in Kansas City and fix things, I also knew how important the trip was to my wife and kids.

Diffactory was out of money, pulling from credit, and bleeding cash. The company was potentially days away from losing everything and here I was on vacation, essentially stealing from my family to make payroll.

I started sketching disaster plans in a notebook I carried around…

Part of the trip took us to Arkansas where I met up with a good friend of mine, Clay, who was scaling an agency to the 7 figure range (which he would later sell successfully)

I swallowed my pride and came clean. I explained everything, and asked him to tell me straight.

What can I do?

He gave me some brilliant advice that pulled us out of the fire, stopped the bleeding, and got us profitable and growing again.

I believe in the power of being humble, being adaptable, and working hard.

Our failures only make us stronger. The obstacles in our path are there to teach us something important.

The word filament is descended from Latin “filum” meaning “thread.”

I realized I’m truly passionate about being a filament for human connections. I feel most alive and purposeful when I’m bringing people together, sharing knowledge, and serving others.

In 2022, I launched The Franchise My Business Podcast to share all I’ve learned in digital marketing, franchising systems, business success, and life.
